The photography career of Patrick Lichfield began soon after he left the army in the early 1960s. For three years he was a studio technician before he started to receive commissions from magazines such as Look, Life, Esquire and Queen. His career took off very quickly thereafter and he soon became one of the UK's best-known photographers. He had an undeniable gift for capturing in photographic portraits the private faces of public personalities and assignments from Vogue, among many internationally famous publications, followed soon after. In 1981 he was appointed official photographer at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and lady Diana Spencer. His long career was celebrated with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 2003 and he was awarded fellowships of both the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Royal Photographic Society. The highlights of this sale include the portraits of the boxer Henry Cooper, actress Maggie Smith, former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and Edward VIII with his wife Wallis Simpson. In addition to these portraits are some iconic British scenes including Chelsea Pensioners, the English countryside and sporting heroes. Several of these images are included in his book Lichfield on Photography. |
