Sunil Madhav Sen was born in West Bengal and when a child, his family moved to Calcutta. He trained as a lawyer, but joined the "Calcutta Group" of artists in 1943. He started exhibiting in the 1940s enjoying increasing success following his winning of the Academy Award art prize in 1945. His work is represented in numerous Indian and international art galleries and collections.
