An unusual Chinese iron red decorated Dish in the form of a Shell, 19th century

formed with deep slightly curved sides and a modelled rim, one end with graduated bands imitating the lines of a conch shell, and perhaps intended as a brush washer, finely painted in iron red with stylised scrolling lotus, the end bands with stylised chrysanthemun spays on a iron red ground, the interior with a 'Shou' medallion symbol, the base unglazed and with traces of impressed fabric.

The style and quality of the decoration here recalls pieces from the Jiaqing period and the paste and finish of the base is certainly consistent with this.
