Summer pavilion at Serpentine Gallery set to open its doors
09/07/2010
The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2010 will be opened tomorrow (July 10th) and will remain on the site until October 17th.
World-renowned architect Jean Nouvel had six months to complete the commission, the tenth of its kind.
The design is a contrast of lightweight materials and metal cantilevered structures, all coloured in vivid red to provide a contrast with the green of Kensington Park.
It will operate as a public space and play host to the gallery's Park Nights – a series of talks and events, which attract 250,000 visitors each summer.
Julia Peyton-Jones, director of the gallery, said: "It is an honour to bring Nouvel's globally acclaimed work to London for everyone to enjoy."
Ten French ping-pong tables have been placed outside the pavilion and TV presenter Myleene Klass showcased her skills at the gallery's annual Summer Party last night (July 8th).
There was no budget for the building as it is funded by sponsorship and the sale of the commissioned piece when the summer is over.
