Masterpiece Fair 'ideal for art market'

24/06/2010
The Masterpiece Fair, which takes place between June 24th and 29th at the Chelsea Barracks, is an ideal opportunity for dealers to browse fine art and furniture.

Giles Hutchinson Smith, chief executive of Mallets, a dealer in rare English and continental furniture, said that the event is "designed by dealers for dealers".

Furthermore it is what the art market needs, especially as auction houses such as Sotheby's are experiencing an increase in profits.

He said: "Looking at expectations for the future, the barometer for that is how much business we do this year, but at the same time it's based around the enthusiasm of the dealers themselves and they have been incredibly supportive."

Mr Hutchinson Smith hopes that the fair will find a permanent home soon as this will entice visitors to see the collection, which is worth more than £1 billion.

The event showcases a wide range of objects including dramatic Celtic weaponry from the 3rd century, fine art, furniture and cognac.
