John Dillinger's escape car up for sale

20/01/2010
The very car in which John Dillinger robbed a collection of US banks and escaped from the police is to go on sale.

The 1930 Ford Model A will be sold during the 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in the US, which runs until January 24th, according to Nitrobahn.

Until the car was restored in 2007 to be used in the Johnny Depp film Public Enemies, the car had remained untouched for decades, still riddled with bullet holes and blood-stained seats.

Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson chairman and chief executive, suggested that the furore that surrounded the bank robber at the time as well as his sustained notoriety make the car a very attractive lot.

He told the news provider: "[John Dillinger's] daring robberies and hold ups fed the nation's hunger for sensationalist news. His ability to elude capture and escape by using fast, reliable cars with seeming impunity made him a folk hero."

"This Ford was at the centre of one of the most famous shootouts in gangster history."

He went on to say that even in light of other cult sensations such as Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger was the most notorious.
