A couple of letters written by Winston Churchill and his wife have sold at auction for more than expected.
The two letters, a thank you note from the ex-prime minister and an engagement invitation from his wife Clementine, sold for a combined sum of £320, according to the Ipswich Evening Star.
Both addressed to a Conservative volunteer by the name of Mr Double, they had been expected to fetch only a couple of hundred pounds.
Geoffrey Barfoot, auction room manager and valuer, said that while the letters were not of any historical or political note, the fact they were penned by the Churchills ensured there would be interest.
He told the news provider: "We thought they would make around a couple of hundred pounds so they have done better than expected.
"They weren't great rarities and they weren't of great historical importance but Churchill is an iconic figure - his signature still creates a lot of interest."
Winston Churchill was prime minister from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955.
