The Skin Speaks a Language Not its Own by Bharti Ker sold for £994,000 at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Auction sale, held in London on June 28th.

Ker's sculpture of a life-size female Indian elephant on its knees and covered in bindis broke her previous record of £198,500 established in April 2008.

The auction made £41 million in total, an increase of 60 per cent from the same sale held last year.

Cheyenne Westphal, chairman of contemporary art for Sotheby's Europe, said: "The solid results, well above the June 2009 total, build on the recent successes of New York and London and affirm the strength and trajectory of the market for contemporary art and the renewed confidence from both buyers and sellers alike."

Other big sellers included Yves Klein's work, Relief Eponge Bleu, which sold for £6.2 million.

Andy Warhol's Camouflage Self-Portrait fetched £1.7 million and Mornington Crescent – Summer Morning by Frank Auerbach sold for £2.2 million.
