100-year-old whisky to go under the hammer

01/02/2010
A half bottle of whisky which is more than 100-years–old is to go on sale, it has been reported.

The bottle of Springbank was distilled by J & A Mitchell & Co Ltd in 1900 and was drawn in 1927, according to the BBC.

It is believed to be one of the world's rarest tipples and is expected to garner a great deal of interest when it is put up for sale in Glasgow on Wednesday (February 3rd).

The item, which will be sold at McTear's Auctioneers, is expected to sell for as much as £6,000.

A number of other rare brands will go under the hammer, though the Springbank is certainly the oldest and rarest.

In the latter half of last year, it was widely reported that a collection of explorers set off to Antarctica in an attempt to retrieve a cache of rare whisky left by the great adventurer Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1909.
